A Bit About Yooperlite

Yooperlite is a fluorescent syenite rock found in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, specifically in the Lake Superior region. You can also find it in other regions of the world as well. Its chemical composition includes sodalite, anorthoclase feldspar, and sometimes amphibole. Classified under sodalite-syenite, yooperlite exhibits a unique fluorescent response under UV light due to the presence of fluorescent minerals like sodalite. This phenomenon makes yooperlite a fascinating and visually striking choice for gemstone décor, especially when carved into gargoyles or other decorative pieces. 5. UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
