About Shoushan Stone and Shoushan Stone Beads

Shoushan stone is a revered stone of the Chinese that has over 100 different varieties. This stone is often used for carving, as it is a softer stone with an approximate 2-3 on the Mohs scale. Chinese artisans often used Shoushan for seal stone crafting. It is not often used for carvings in the United States, however.

What you will most often find are Shoushan stone beads. This material is composed of mainly clay minerals. These beads are a composite stone bead that likely uses a form of colored resin to add artistic flair and stabilize the soft stone. Among the minerals found in the stone are kaolinite, pyrophyllite, illite, dickite, and nacrite. It is sometimes referred to as agalmatolite which is not an approved mineral species.
