Fluorite is part of the fluorite group. Also known as fluorspar, is a mineral with the chemical formula CaF2. It's composed of calcium fluoride, and its remarkable variety of colors is due to the presence of different impurities within its crystal structure. These impurities, such as rare earth elements or transition metals, absorb specific wavelengths of light, resulting in a stunning range of hues, including purple, green, yellow, blue, and clear.

Fluorite crystals can form in various shapes, such as cubes, octahedrons, and dodecahedrons. The specific crystal habit is influenced by the conditions under which the mineral forms.

Fluorite is found worldwide, with significant deposits in countries like China, Mexico, Germany, and the United States. These locations offer the ideal geological conditions for the formation of high-quality fluorite crystals.

We found the information you want in a Mindat.org thread here which led us to a website that discusses the spectroscopy of this unique form of fluorite. There are many assumptions about the actual chemical composition, as is outlined in the thread cited. The data in this test has shown that the white feather-like inclusions are baryte and quartz. Isn't that interesting?

A Note About the UV Reactivity of Fluorite

Fluorite is known for its fluorescence, but not all colors of fluorite exhibit this property. Generally, blue or blue-green fluorite tends to fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light, emitting a blue or violet glow. Some purple or pink fluorite specimens may also fluoresce, typically emitting a pink or red glow. On the other hand, yellow, green, or clear fluorite colors are less likely to fluoresce or may not fluoresce at all. The presence of certain trace elements or impurities in the fluorite crystal structure can influence its fluorescence properties, leading to variations in fluorescence among different colors of fluorite. We did not test these pieces with our newer 365nm light. So, we do not know if there is any reactivity with that nm at this time.

2. The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences.

4. Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
5. UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 365nm, but used to be 395mm only. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
